Saudi Arabia's ability to reroute crude away from the Persian Gulf depends on a chain, not a single pipeline. Crude can move from the eastern producing system through the East-West Pipeline to Yanbu on the Red Sea, load onto tankers there and then move either north toward Suez and the SUMED system or south toward Bab el-Mandeb and the open Indian Ocean. Each segment has its own capacity and security constraint.

What the evidence establishes

The U.S. Energy Information Administration describes the East-West crude pipeline as a 5 million-barrel-per-day system from Abqaiq to Yanbu that can be temporarily expanded to 7 million b/d. EIA also notes that Yanbu's share of Saudi seaborne crude exports reached a record 18% in the second quarter of 2024 as Aramco used the western route to manage Red Sea disruptions. The system therefore has demonstrated commercial use beyond contingency planning.

The commercial reading

The strategic value is optionality. Saudi Arabia can reduce Hormuz exposure, choose between European and Asian routing, and keep some exports moving if one maritime chokepoint becomes constrained. But rerouting never removes geography. A cargo leaving Yanbu for Asia still faces Bab el-Mandeb unless it takes the much longer Cape of Good Hope route. Redundancy shifts risk rather than eliminating it.

What to watch next

Track actual Yanbu loadings, East-West Pipeline utilisation, storage availability and shipping flows through Bab el-Mandeb, Suez and the Cape. Design capacity is only useful when every downstream link can absorb the redirected barrels.
